We can find non-military words to describe non-war situations.
"Language, incontestably, reveals the speaker…It goes without saying, then, that language is also a political instrument, means, and proof of power…It is the most vivid and crucial key to identify: It reveals the private identity, and connects one with, or divorces one from, the larger, public, or communal identity."
I'm not "in the trenches" with you when we work together—and I never will be. Instead, I’d say “we’ll work overtime to finish client work or a product launch”.
I learned about war trenches from my dad's photos during his military service in the Vietnam War. And business isn't war.
Why is all of this important?
Words and phrases are activating. The impact and strength of the effect depend on you.
If you need help with learning more words, you can:
Use a thesaurus.
Learn a new (to you) 2nd language
Ask questions to uncover the deeper meaning of the phrases you use
The catalyst for this post was a thought about the words I used or used out of habit or programming in my childhood, early adult life and professional career. Now, I stop myself and ask if I know the meaning of the word I'm using.
What are your favorite ways to learn new words or languages?
Are You Aware?
A recently published study in The BMJ shows that dancing can help with challenges to your mental health.
"Compared with active controls, large reductions in depression were found for dance (n=107…), and moderate reductions for walking or jogging (n=1210…), yoga (n=1047…), strength training (n=643…), mixed aerobic exercises (n=1286…), and tai chi or qigong (n=343…)."
Note: The letter "n" is for the number of people in the study.
OK, I’ve shared the study. Now, it’s time for you to try it for yourself.
Dance break time!! What songs are on your dance break playlist?
